India prohibits the import of foie gras due to the abuse of ducks

India has prohibited the import of foie gras due to the abuse inflicted on ducks in its production, as the animals are forcefully fed with a funnel to achieve atrophy of the liver.

The prohibition has its origin in a report sent by the international organization Animal Equality to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in India, with the results of an investigation which showed the abuse of the animals in foie gras farms in Spain and France, from where this product is sent to other countries, among them India.

Other countries which have prohibited the import of foie gras are Argentina, Austria, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Finland, Israel, Turkey, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom and California.
