Beginnings of new European legislation about horse welfare

Jin a meeting with Experts taking place in Brussels to analyze the current situation of horse welfare in Europe, the Asociación Nacional para la Defensa de los Animales (National Association for the Defence of Animals, ANDA), through the organization Eurogroup for Animals and the World Horse Welfare have testified before the European Commission of the need to create legislation specific to the welfare of horses. Included among the proposals are improving the identification and registration of these animals, training for professionals who work with them, prohibition of long-distance transportation to the slaughterhouse and the implementation of more humane forms of sacrifice.

The Unit Head of Animal Welfare for the Directorate General for Health and Consumers of the European Commission (DG SANCO), Andrea Gavinelli has assured alter the meeting that the institution is aware of the existing legal gaps and the importance of this expert’s meeting as a step toward improving the lives of the horses in the European Union.
