What requirements must be met for the introduction of pets into Spain?

The movement of pets is regulated by community and national health regulations which guarantee the animals’ health and the health of people. It is important to verify that the animal meets all the requirements detailed in the instructions, as incompliance would lead to the immobilization of the animal in quarantine installations or in their re-expedition to their country of origin. In general, animals should be accompanied by their owners or representatives, with the European passport, if applicable, identified and with the health certification which must be provided in Spanish. The introduction of dogs, cats and ferrets less than three months old is not permitted in Spain as these animals are not vaccinated against rabies. With regards to their movement within the European Union, we recommend that you consult Regulation (EC) no. 998/2003 of the European Parliament and the Council of May 26, 2003, where the applicable zoo-sanitary regulations for the movement of animals without commercial purposes are established: : Reglamento (CE) n° 998/2003 desplazamiento animales de compañíaSearch in the database: “pets”; “passport”; “transport of animals”; “vaccination”; “animal health”
