This book deals with the evolution of the relationship between humans and animals, with a particular focus on the Belgian legislation, and the need for a reform of the legal status of animals within the legal system. This publication brings together experts in different fields: history, art, ethics, science, and law. The content of this cooperation is condensed in a flowing text, which is well structured and easy to understand. The approach is in line with the most important publications in this matter: the book starts with an overview of the relationships between humans and animals in the history, art, and science; then follows a legal debate on the animal welfare legislation under the EU and Belgian laws, the punishment of animal abuse, and the “schizophrenia” of a legal system that still considers animals as property, instead of living and sentient beings. The book also presents some ideas to draft an Animal Law Code.
