Do animals have rights? Some German researchers give their answer to this broad question in the book we present, which presents the various facets of the relationship between humans and animals. This publication offers an historical, religious, philosophical and psychological understanding of this relationship, as well as a deep analysis of the related legal issues. The principal themes are critically discussed, such as the concept of animal welfare, the ambivalence of the dichotomy “subject-object”, the commitment of civil society, the animal advocacy, the livestock farming system, the aquaculture, the experimentation, the hunting, the exhibitions with animals, the health risks, the future of food, the legal status of animals, the new animal law studies, the global animal law, and especially the consideration that animals are sentient beings, which limits the property law, and open the door to further developments. Also the weaknesses and challenges of law enforcement are examined by current cases, judgments and practice.
