We share the planet with other animals. We belong to an animal species, recognizing our species as similar to its condition to ours. This raises a set of questions of moral importance to which this volume is dedicated: how should we deal with other animals; what interest do we have in recognizing a relevant subjective status; or will the Law still have a role to play in this recognition; what is the balance in the sharing of the planet's resources; and what is it that our animal condition tells us about our own moral status? These preliminary questions highlight many others, about domestication, symbols, habits, food, company, abuse, denaturation, medicalization, experimentation, industrialization, suffering - all of them challenging and demanding ethical responses.
